Synopsis

If the Northern Kingdom is to march south against the Salchek invaders, they need allies. Bordering the southern ocean, Zomar is the only prospect. Considering the distance, Jeff and Carl decide to take ship for the passage south and join a caravan headed for the west coast of Arvalia. Still a week out from the coast, the caravan faces disaster high in the mountains.

The Skarpa Mountains are unknown except to legends that are so extreme they are hard to take seriously. Yet the legends badly underestimate the reality of what the caravan encounters. Finally arrived in Hochberg, the men soon learn that no ship ever ventures beyond the protected Sea of Tingel. That hardly matters since there are no ships in Hochberg worthy of the name anyway—except one; maybe. A ship only one step from sinking at the pier.

With the first blizzard of the year moving south, Jeff and Carl finally set sail for Zomar in the rebuilt topsail schooner Gilnora. Leaving the Sea of Tingel, meeting the first big swell of an immense ocean, Jeff suddenly realizes there might in fact be real monsters out here. The crew thinks so. They’re terrified. This ocean cannot possibly be like anything on Earth.

Standing in the bow, watching the sun set over the ocean as land drops out of sight and a snow squall blows by, Jeff wonders how he ever thought he could pull it off. Survival storms are followed by battles with pirates, duels, and then more storms that drive the Gilnora so far south they sail off the map. Here the men encounter one blazing moment of discovery that forever changes their lives. This ocean is truly different from any on Earth.
